Elon Musk’s decision to fight an order to remove graphic stabbing footage from social media platform X has triggered a wave of anger from Australian politicians. The footage in question depicts violent scenes from two stabbing attacks in Sydney last week. The federal government is renewing its focus on combating misinformation and harm on social media in response to these incidents.
Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), has been accused of ignoring the law and obstructing efforts to take down the graphic content. In a response that prompted fury from politicians, he described the e-safety commissioner’s takedown order as a demand for “global content bans” by Australia’s “censorship commissar.”
Despite Musk’s objections, X has since stated it would remove the content while it challenges the “unlawful and dangerous approach” in court. The platform’s stance has been criticized by leaders from both the Labor and Liberal parties.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton expressed his support for strengthening the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s powers, allowing them to monitor platforms for compliance with industry standards and imposing fines for repeated breaches. He also emphasized the importance of striking the right balance between protecting free speech and maintaining safety.
Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt condemned Musk’s response as offensive to the Australian public. He stated that such actions highlight the need for stronger laws and accountability measures for social media platforms.
The federal government and the opposition are poised to introduce reworked laws to enforce social media compliance, aiming to curb misinformation and ensure that platforms are held accountable for their content.
