Machakos County, Kenya – At least 12 people have died, and seven others are reported missing as devastating floods sweep through Machakos County. The heavy rains began several weeks ago, causing significant loss of life and widespread damage.
County Commissioner Josephine Ouko revealed the grim statistics on April 30, noting that the deaths occurred across various sub-counties in the region. One person died in Machakos Town, four in Kalama, four in Athi River, one in Matungulu, and one in Kangundo sub-counties. Ouko confirmed that approximately 11,010 people have been affected, with 2,183 households displaced across the county.
The floods have caused damage to infrastructure, with destroyed and damaged roads, bridges, and buildings reported throughout the area. In particular, Kiaeni and Inyooni bridges in Machakos Town sub-county were completely destroyed, rendering certain roads impassable. Additionally, 46 houses collapsed due to the heavy downpour.
Rescue operations are underway, with ongoing searches for missing individuals. In addition to the 271 displaced people housed in rescue camps across the county, the local administration is distributing food and non-food items to affected households.
Commissioner Ouko emphasized the need for ongoing public sensitization on flood safety and the dangers of crossing flooded bridges. She called for repairs to damaged infrastructure, including roads and bridges, to restore normal transport and ensure the safety of residents.
Ouko urged residents to exercise vigilance and take necessary precautions, including moving to higher grounds when necessary. The county government is working closely with local authorities to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those in need.
As the region grapples with the aftermath of these catastrophic floods, efforts to repair infrastructure and support affected communities will be critical in the coming weeks.
