Reggae/Dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr, alias Shatta Wale, has been crowned the overall winner at this year’s Ghana Music Awards UK.
The anticipated event, which took place on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Royal Regeny Palace, London, saw Shatta Wale as the headline act.
Apart from being the overall winner, Artiste of the Year, the On God hitmaker also bagged four other trophies: Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, and Most Dominant Fanbase of the Year (Shatta Movement, SM).
On X, the singer-songwriter and record producer celebrated the milestone and ridiculed his detractors: “I am very sorry my haters, you couldn’t see I was coming this way.”
In another X post, he intimated some award schemes are based on artistes begging for accolades, while his win at the 2023 GMA-UK was completely merit-based.
“There is a difference between “I beg you awards” and “I deserve it awards”,” he wrote, attaching a video of him performing On God to a thrilled audience at the 2023 GMA-UK.
On Facebook, the Charles Nii Armah Mensah page lauded the Ghana Music Awards UK for doing what the artiste’s long-standing nemesis, the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in Ghana, could not do. The page explained by claiming the artiste was paid a whopping GBP80,000 “for performance” at the 2023 GMA-UK. The page added that clinching the Artiste of the Year award was only “icing on the cake”.
