The Minority says there is no need for the Majority to request an emergency sitting.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Speaker on May 10, said that in pursuant to Article 112(3) of the Constitution and Order 53(1) and (2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, summoned the House to sit on Friday, May 17.

The Majority is seeking to address key government business items, including the adoption of the Thirty-Fourth Report of the Appointments Committee and a motion on additional financing. Members of Parliament from recess for an emergency sitting.

They also want parliament to be recalled to consider a motion for an “Additional Financing Agreement between GoG and the IDA for an amount of US$150 million to finance the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project” and also a “Request for Tax Exemption for selected beneficiaries under the 1D1F Programme.”

Subsequently, the Alban Bagbin has recalled Members of Parliament from recess for an emergency sitting on May 17.

However, Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza said the Majorities said there is no urgency about the matters necessitating the recall.

He argued that recalling the house would not address the erratic power supply issue currently affecting the country.

Speaking to JoyNews on May 13, he said “Our colleague will also respond  to Mr Speaker’s call and come to parliament on Friday.

“So yes, I agree that our colleagues have requested. Preliminary needs to take a decision on them. So when we go, hopefully we will have the opportunity to take a decision.”

But the Majority Chief Whip, Habib Mohammed, argues that all the issues, including the approval of the ministers already vetted by parliament, are necessary for the smooth running of the government.

“Approval of the minsters is very important, for example if you go to the ministry of Health, the minister and all the two deputies are all new. They are all part of those considering to be approved and you have a full ministry very sensitive like the ministry of health, no minister , no deputy minister because Parliament has not be able to approve,” he said.
