Black Princesses captain, Afi Amenyaku, says the whole team believes they could turn things around despite conceding the first goal against Nigeria in the final of the women’s football event at the African Games.

Ghana came from behind to beat the Super Falconets at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday night with a 2-1 score, clinching gold in the process.

Yusif Basigi’s side fell behind in the 23rd minute of the game when Amenyaku’s howler allowed Nigeria to open the scoring.

The West African neighbours took the lead into the break but it was all Ghana after the recess and that momentum played to their advantage as Tracey Twum scored the equaliser to take the game to extra time.

Abdulai Mukarama wrapped up the win ninth minute of extra time after being found by Maafia Nyame on the edge of the penalty box. Her low strike beat the Nigerian goalkeeper and shot Ghana into the lead.

Speaking to Joy Sports after the game, Ghana’s goalkeeper revealed the girls were still confident of winning the game even after they had fallen behind.

“We knew we would come back stronger [after conceding the first goal],” a smiling Amenyaku said.

“We weren’t scared of anything.”

Amenyaku also adds that the thing will now focus on the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be staged in Colombia later this year.

“From here, we will be preparing towards our World Cup in Colombia,” she continued.

“We are urging all Ghanaians to keep praying for us and keep supporting us.”

The win at the Cape Coast Stadium means Ghan has now beaten Nigeria in the last finals they played each other; the other being the WAFU B U-20 Cup which was held in Kumasi last year.
