In a significant move aimed at bolstering security in the Ahafo Region, Newmont Ghana has initiated the construction of a military camp at Sankore-Nyamebekyere in the Asunafo South District. The project, fully funded by Newmont, marks a critical step towards enhancing the operational capacity and living conditions of military personnel in the region.
The sod-cutting ceremony, held recently, witnessed the presence of distinguished personalities, including chiefs, executives of the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council, security service members, executives of the Asunafo South District Assembly, and staff from Newmont. Brigadier Commander Michael Opoku, the General Commanding Officer for Central Command, highlighted the pressing need for the project. He explained that soldiers posted to the Ahafo Region currently lack adequate accommodation, compelling them to commute from Sunyani for their duties. This situation often hampers their effectiveness, especially in emergencies.
In his address, Brigadier Commander Opoku expressed profound gratitude to Newmont for their support. He emphasized that the new camp would significantly alleviate the stress soldiers face due to inadequate accommodation, thus enhancing their readiness and response capabilities.
Ogyedom Appiah Kubi Pabo Katakye IV, the Chief of Sankore, also expressed optimism about the project’s impact. He noted that the presence of a military camp would curb the violence that frequently erupts during general elections, tarnishing the town’s reputation. The chief assured that the community would support the contractor to ensure the project’s timely completion within the three-month deadline, thereby swiftly improving security in the area.
Hon. Frank Aduse Poku, speaking at the ceremony, extended heartfelt thanks to Newmont Ghana for their pivotal role in establishing the military base’s Ahafo branches. He announced that engineers from the Asunafo South Assembly would supervise the project to ensure its completion within the stipulated timeframe.
The sentiment among Sankore residents was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed relief, noting that the presence of the military barracks would mitigate fears among women and other vulnerable groups. They anticipated a significant reduction in election-time violence, enhancing the town’s reputation and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
This initiative by Newmont Ghana underscores the company’s commitment to community development and security enhancement. The new military camp at Sankore-Nyamebekyere is poised to bring lasting positive changes to the Ahafo Region, reflecting a collaborative effort towards a safer and more secure environment.
